FABRIC ARTIST

Meet Naida

Naida grew up in South Florida and attended the University of Florida majoring in graphic design. Shortly after moving to North Carolina in 1977, she formed her own advertising and design agency and coined the phrase “The Crystal Coast”, a brand name that  is still being utilized today to describe coastal North Carolina.

For over thirty years Naida’s artistic career was spent designing branding packages, brochures and advertising plans for numerous clients throughout North Carolina, as well as designing and drafting house plans and interior designs for her family’s construction company.

In 2011, a new challenge became her passion and artistic path. The artworks she creates are fashioned from hundreds of different colorful textile fabrics, using fusing techniques, quilt stitching and thread painting. After designing an original pattern, she cuts, blends and fuses fabrics together. Piece by piece, sometimes itty bitty pieces, the creation takes shape. Dimension is accomplished by thread painting using free motion machine stitching.

By converting unrelated fabrics and threads into meaningful works of art, Naida acknowledges the ebb and flow of life through the use of repeating patterns, bold symbolism and flowing curves. To illustrate her joy in the discoveries each day still brings, Naida stitches her signature mantra “ah life” hidden somewhere into all of her creations.
